On July 17, 2026, the Weedagama Foundation completed three years of work with rural elementary schools in Sri Lanka. Our first meal service on that date in 2023 marked the start of a sustained effort to help small schools—those serving fewer than 100 students in grades K–5—with nutrition, supplies, connectivity, and programs chosen together with school leadership.
Where we work
We now partner with three schools in the Matara district:
- MR/ Sri Vijaya Kanitu Vidyalaya (Athuraliya)
- MR/ Dampella Kanitu Vidyalaya (Dampalla)
- Golden Star Pre-School (Dampalla)
Together they serve about 80 students.
What we have accomplished
Daily nutrition remains central. Since July 2023 we have logged more than 26,600 meals through school food programs—regular cooking and meal service so children can learn without hunger.
We have also expanded support in other areas families and teachers asked for:
- School supplies and classroom materials, funded year after year
- In-kind gifts from donors—laptops, Chromebooks, a projector, audio equipment, and bulk school supplies—delivered to partner schools
- Internet service at partner sites, including ongoing connectivity through local providers so students and teachers can use donated devices and online resources
- After-school art classes at MR/ Dampella Kanitu Vidyalaya, with instruction funded through our art program across 2025 and 2026
- Technology equipment, services, and subscriptions; annual school trips; monthly haircuts; classroom painting; library storage; and preschool tuition support at Golden Star Pre-School
- Provide tuition assistance to pre-k students who are currently not supported meaningfully through government funding or other programs
Behind the scenes, every purchase is documented and approved so donors and partners can see how support is used. Foundation staff and school teams review expenses before funds go out—keeping the work practical, accountable, and focused on students.
Growing step by step
We began with one pilot school and added partners deliberately. In 2026 we are supporting three institutions with active projects across food, supplies, technology, student activities, and facility improvements—expanding only when we can sustain long-term help.
Celebrating with students
To mark the anniversary, students at MR/ Dampella Kanitu Vidyalaya shared a pizza lunch as part of our Children's Day celebration—a joyful moment alongside the everyday work of meals, art classes, and classroom support.
The photos capture one afternoon. The deeper milestone is the steady rhythm of support week after week.
Looking ahead
Three years in, our mission is unchanged: listen to school leaders, fund real needs, report openly, and grow at a pace that preserves quality. We are grateful to donors, volunteers, and school staff who make this possible.
Thank you for following the foundation's news. We will post updates here as new programs and milestones are completed.
